Branch Programme - 2017

The branch programme for 2017 is now online - twelve interesting nights, and the WSS AGM in May to look forward to. Details are available here.

Branch Notes - November 2016

In November, Rodge Musselwhite presented his annual roundup of shipping photographed in our local area, and further afield in Southampton. Focusing mainly on vessels using the pilotage facilities at Brixham, we reminisced about wide the range of ships that have passed Berry Head in the last twelve months, as well as recalling some of the passenger calls in Tor Bay this summer. A particular highlight was the close-up bow shots of large vessels underway off Berry Head. Many thanks to Rodge for his efforts, as usual it was an enjoyable and well researched evening.

Branch Notes - October 2016

In October Ken Cload presented a recent trip to the Netherlands. Based at the Hook of Holland he showed the breadth of shipping using the New Waterway, as well as those ships using Europoort. These views were interspersed with trips to Antwerp and the Schelde, as well as Amsterdam. Ken’s talk was illustrated with a superb set of photographs, and left many of us longing for a similar trip! Many thanks to Ken, as usual, for an excellent evening.

August 2016 Meeting

For our August meeting, Colin Baigent will present "Travels with Shipping" - 19:30 11th August, Alice Cross Centre, Teignmouth.

Branch Notes - July 2016

In July we welcomed David Brown, who went to sea in the 1950s. David gave a fascinating account of his career, describing the voyages that saw him travel the world as well as the people he worked with. His vessels, including T2 tankers, Liberty ships, the Queen Mary, and smaller cargo ships were illustrated and researched thanks to the efforts of Roland Whaite, Roy Fenton and David Whiteside. David described the conditions on the ships, as well as telling some very entertaining tales about his experiences in the shipping industry. An excellent evening, covering aspects of shipping that we do not often see as a branch, which was greatly enjoyed by the attending members.

Branch Notes - June 2016

In June David Eeles took us to the Fareast with a tour of Bangkok, before showing scenes taken in South America and finishing on the Kiel Canal for some more familiar views. David’s talk included photographs of ships that would not be seen in local waters, which made for an interesting evening, as did his emphasis on traditional cargo handling which he captured in a series of videos. We look forward to seeing more of his travels next year. The evening concluded with a look at some of the ships seen by Colin Baigent early in this year’s AGM weekend in Rotterdam. We look hope to see the rest of the weekend in due course.
